Rock Shelter locally known as Shidalephadi together with adjacent land comprised in part of survey plot no.534

Bagalkot, Badami
Others, Prehistoric Sites

Situated to the north-east of Badami, at a distance of about 3km., is a large natural cave called ‘Shidlaphadi’ in the mountainous area stretching from Badami to Mahakuta consisting of quartzite rock, called the Kaladgi series. There is a group of rock shelters in the rear of this cave. It contained occupational debris consisting of microliths and some pottery. Some of the boulders lying inside the cave bear graffiti comprising such forms as bull and sword with antennae. The cave wall has inscriptions in white over a red background, paleographically ascribable to the 5th – 6th century CE, suggesting an occupation of the cave, possibly intermittently, from the Prehistoric to Chalukyan times.
